Foreign students require international student medical insurance

Foreign students today opt for some international student medical insurance to help cover unexpected medical expenses. Studying in a foreign country itself is expensive to the student. And if you consider the additional burden of bearing medical costs in a foreign land, things can be rather expensive.

It is not possible for everyone to bear the unexpected expenses associated with health problems when studying on a scholarship and living on a shoestring budget. It is for this reason that many states make it compulsory for foreign students to be covered with some international medical insurance. 

Buy your international medical insurance plan at home

International student medical insurance can be bought from either their home country, or in the country they will be studying in. however it is generally better to get the insurance from their own country as universities offer waivers on such insurance policies, as long as they follow all the requirements of the universities. Moreover, student health insurance is cheaper from home than the ones available abroad. 

In fact, some states also set the minimum amount for the overseas health insurance, so that it will provide sufficient coverage if the student ends up with health problems. This is because the affordable student health insurance that the student chooses should be sufficient to cover medical treatment, repatriation of remains and emergency evacuation. 

Some universities offer waivers on the insurance policy

The cost of an international student medical insurance policy is in the range of $600 - $700 per year. This is why most universities that sponsor international students work at subsidizing insurance cost coverage by providing cheap medical care to the students through special schemes. 

According to these special schemes, the university will have to fund 60% of the costs towards the scheme while only 40% of the cost is picked up by insurance companies. This coverage is also provided to those students who teach and do research work. There are waivers offered for this health insurance for students. However this is applied only when the students' insurance coverage is more than the standard set by the university. 

Even visiting students require international student medical insurance

International student medical insurance is not only a must for the regular students, but also for all visiting scholars. This is per visa requirements, where short term affordable student health insurance is available at $100 - $200. According to visa rules, even dependants accompanying these visiting students have to have insurance coverage for medical costs. 

International student medical insurance has to cover both inpatient and outpatient costs of the student. It should also have minimum coverage for the university, which is on an average, $50,000. 

Most colleges also require coverage for dental insurance, treatment of mental and nervous disorders and costs of emergency medical evacuation. Then there are universities that require your student health insurance to cover injuries during inter-collegiate sports and other unexpected events. 

The deductible of the international student medical insurance policy should not exceed $500. As universities require some or a combination of medical costs and health coverage, it is important that you choose your international student medical insurance plan wisely.
