Short Term Health Insurance Solutions
Short term health insurance is necessary in several situations. These types of plans work well for those people or families that may be between jobs. It also works well for those who have insurance coming to them through employment, but may need to wait a certain amount of time to be included. Most plans offer health care coverage for up to six months time. Some short term health insurance policies are available for those that want up to a year's worth of coverage. For those needing a longer term option, look at individual or family plans as these can be more cost effective for you.
The need for short term health insurance is great, which has allowed for more insurance companies to offer solutions. Getting short term care is easier and is less detailed than longer termed programs. Most of these plans provide you with health insurance that covers things like unforeseen accidents or illnesses. Most don't provide all of the standard care options including doctor's visits, dental care, vision care, immunizations or physicals you may need. Short term health insurance is a good option for those that want a low cost way to protect themselves from the unknown but may not work well for families.
If you have short term health insurance, you will not be able to take advantage of the HIPAA plans. Those are highly expensive plans designed to help people who have a hard time qualifying for other health care coverage because of pre existing health conditions. If you may qualify and want to use an HIPAA plan, don't invest in a short term health insurance plan as it could cause you to become ineligible. If you have pre existing medical conditions, realize that most short term plans don't provide you with coverage for these illnesses.
For those that do not qualify for short term health insurance, you may want to consider employer sponsored programs from your past employer that may offer a bridge of coverage for a limited amount of time. An example of this is a COBRA plan, which requires that you pay the normal health care costs along with the portion your employer paid, but gives you good health care coverage even with an existing medical condition.
